Opuntia azurea has got this name due to the color of its green-blue stem, it is a prickly pear with long spines. The color of its stem varies greatly, depending on the atmospheric conditions (the intense sun or dry cold) from blue-green to purple. It is presented divided into two parts: the lower part is characterized by areoles, that are distant from each other and are hairless, the upper part is characterized by areoles, that are still distant, from which long and thin spines sprout. In spring, it blooms with flowers of a beautiful deep yellow color. It produces oval, thornless fruits that are of a reddish color.
