A caudiciform plant (caudex) of a very slow growth. Its caudex, of a globular shape, is wrapped in layers of fleshy leaves which, when wilting, make it look like an onion, hence the nickname “Onion Cactus”. At the apex it generates a tangle of long and thin stems, almost completely devoid of leaves, from which, in spring, small green star-shaped flowers bloom.
