They are columnar cactus with dark green or blue green stems, covered with 8-10 medium-sized ribs along which there are areolas with long and robust thorns, which give to the plants the nickname of “toothpick cactus”. They have a very branched structure that becomes more evident with the growing age of the plants, this cactacea in nature reaches up to 10 meters in height! It is very showy in its columnar habit and in the grandeur of its large spines, as well as in the inflorescences that also have a particularity: its large flowers bloom exclusively at night, and their intense fragrance attracts moths so they can quickly find the flowers even in the middle to its thick spines. Here are some tips for its cultivation: It requires a lot of light and likes direct sun rays. It is preferable to keep it at mild temperatures and never below 5 °C, for this reason it is recommended to place it in sheltered places during the winter period. It requires little water in summer, only when the soil is completely dry, while it is preferable to suspend completely watering in winter. It is easy to notice if the plant requires water from the loss of turgor of its stems. The best option is to use a substrate suitable for cacti, with the addition of fine sand for good drainage. They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
