It is a rare creeping cactus. It produces erect and hairless stems up to 50 cm long with 4 serrated ribs, on which downy areoles with short brownish spines are formed. The epidermis can vary in color from dark green to brownish, densely covered with irregular darker spots, creating a marble effect, hence the name of the species (from the Latin word "maculatus" which means "spotted"). In late spring / early summer, it blooms with large, creamy-white nocturnal inflorescences with brownish outer lobes.
