The crested shape of this cactaceae has a fan-like structure that makes it unique in its kind. The cresting is a mutation that will never be identical in plants making each of them strongly sought by collectors all over the world. O. miquelii in its normal form is a cactus with a cylindrical stem and branched green-blue colour. Its stem has numerous slightly silky areolas, from which many long and thick thorns of colour varying from yellow-brown to white-grey come out. It blooms in adulthood generating large white-pink cup-shaped flowers.
