It is a caudiciform plant with green and fleshy annual stems. In fact, during the vegetative rest period, it loses both the stems and the leaves, to grow them back during the vegetative period. These plants are characterized by a voluble or climbing stem, with alternate, large and variously shaped leaves. The plant produces large flowers of bright colors, that range from white to blue or red.
