Description:

This beautiful succulent is in some respects similar to a cactacea, from which however it already differs at first sight for the inflorescences. It has columnar stems of a nice light green during the growth phase, which tends to become bluish-gray later on; it is equipped with slightly marked and narrow longitudinal ribs, from which long continuous lines of pointed tubercles, similar to thorns, branch off. It is the largest species of the genus, which in nature can reach up to two meters in height, becoming a real tree with very few branches but with a great visual impact. Its charm is amplified when flashy clusters of abundant yellow-orange flowers bloom at the apex. Fun fact: this species was used in the past to reduce the sense of hunger and thirst during hunting trips and still today, in some alternative medicines, it is used as a supplement with slimming properties!

Plant care:

It likes an exposure to full sun in rather airy locations.

It prefers rather mild temperatures, however it still survives even at temperatures close to freezing if the soil is dry.

Water moderately but only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water the plant once a week in spring and summer and suspend watering completely in winter.

The best soil is a well draining one, for example formed by a mixture of peat and pumice so that the water does not stagnate.

They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
