H. coccinneus is a small bulbous plant, also called 'blood flower' in reference to the red color of its beautiful scarlet flowers that grow from the underground bulb. The flowering takes place in late summer with shiny flowers, with petals of bright colors, ranging from coral to scarlet and have a waxy texture. After the flowering from the bulb, the green and fleshy lanceolate leaves come up and disappear in June when the plant goes into vegetative rest.
