Description:
The name polyacanthus derives from “poly” a lot and “acantha” thorn. In fact, this low-growing cactus, usually solitary, has an elongated cylindrical stem of light green color, covered with white woolly areoles, from which many spines come out. The central yellow-brown ones are straight and long (up to 5 cm), the radial ones, often superimposed on each other, are much shorter and off-white or red in color.
From April to June, it produces funnel-shaped diurnal flowers of a pinkish orange or deep red color at the apex.

It likes an exposure to full sun in rather airy locations.
It is preferable to keep it at mild temperatures and never below 8 °C, for this reason it is recommended to shelter it during the winter period.
Water moderately but only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water the plant once a week in spring and summer and suspend watering completely in winter.
A medium porous substrate, consisting of soil mixed with sand, which makes it well draining. is an optimal solution.
They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
