The name polyacanthus derives from “poly” a lot and “acantha” thorn. In fact, this low-growing cactus, usually solitary, has an elongated cylindrical stem of light green color, covered with white woolly areoles, from which many spines come out. The central yellow-brown ones are straight and long (up to 5 cm), the radial ones, often superimposed on each other, are much shorter and off-white or red in color. From April to June, it produces funnel-shaped diurnal flowers of a pinkish orange or deep red color at the apex.
