Description:

Called 'Socotra Fig' or 'Socotra Fig Tree'. A rare caudiciform plant, in its trunk enlarged at the base it stores water to survive during drought periods. Over time, D. gigas branches out and can reach up to 2 meters in height and up to 1 meter in diameter. At the ends of its branches long, lanceolate and shiny dark green leaves with lighter veins are grouped. During the vegetative rest the plant loses its leaves, which before falling take on orange shades. In autumn, very particular disc-shaped inflorescences are born at the apex of the branches, with lots of pale yellow flowers.

Plant care:

They grow well in dimness but require a lot of undirected light.

It is preferable to keep it at mild temperatures and never below 15 °C, for this reason it is recommended to shelter it during the winter period.

Water moderately, only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water it once a week in spring and summer, reduce watering to once every two months in autumn and to suspend it completely in winter.

The best soil is a well draining one, for example formed by a mix of peat and pumice so that water does not stagnate.

They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
