The name of the genus honors the inspector of the Palermo Botanical Garden Michelangelo Console. The plant is also often called 'Road Kill Cactus'. It is a cactus with an elongated and flattened ovoid body, which can reach up to 6 m in height. In summer, its beautiful red, orange or yellow flowers bloom, and the fruits are also very showy, about 8 cm large and of a reddish color. C. rubescens is a suitable plant for decorating rock gardens.
