The name of the genus Conophytum derives from the Greek words "kònos" (cone) and "phytòn" (plant), due to the characteristic cone shape of the stem. The name C. violaciflorum derives from the purple color of its flower. It is a rare, slow-growing succulent plant, which clusters over time. Its body is made up of fleshy leaves of a shiny light green color with darker colored dots and veins. Like the other Conophytum, this succulent plant also has a particular growth: the new leaves are formed inside the stem and then come out when the old leaves begin to dry out. The dry leaves protect the body of the plant during the summer vegetative rest, like some sort of a blanket.
