The name of this rare plant derives from ancient Greek "kònos" (cone) and "phytòn" (plant), due to the characteristic cone shape of the stem, while "obcordellum" derives from ancient Latin and means "heart-shaped" in reference to its fleshy green-purple leaves, joined at the base. The skin of this plant is covered with small dots and darker veins.
