The name of the genus Conophytum derives from the Greek "kònos" ("cone") and "phytòn" ("plant"), due to the characteristic cone shape of the stem. It is a rare slow-growing succulent plant, which clusters over time. It is a dwarf perennial plant, which reaches a maximum of 4 cm in height. Its body is made up of fleshy, globose, egg-shaped leaves, of a green color with red shades at the base, covered with small dark dots at the top. Like the other Conophytum, this plant also has a particular growth: the new leaves are formed inside the stem and then come out, when the old leaves begin to dry up. The dry leaves protect the body of the plant during the summer vegetative rest.
