Cephalopentandra

Cephalopentandra

It is an unusual kind of succulent, characterized by a massive caudex, which in nature can weigh up to ten kilos! Its woody stem, covered with a bark rough to the touch, is strongly lumpy, similar in shape to a volcano, covered with solidified lava. In addition to the ornamental appearance that it gives to the plant, the caudex performs the important function of storing water, which can be exploited in the periods in which the succulent does not have it: it is a clever trick that the Cephalopentandra, like others genera, uses to survive in the arid environments from which it comes. Climbing branches grow from this barky root, which after a while become woody and contribute to giving a vegetative touch to the plant, thus making it perfect for decorating, with its linearity and simplicity, the most disparate environments! Here are some tips for its cultivation: It requires a lot of light throughout the year, however, avoid direct sun rays during the hottest hours of the day, as they may burn the leaves. Keep it at mild temperatures and never below 15 °C, it is recommended to shelter it during the winter period. Water regularly but moderately during the growing season (when new leaves born), just when the soil is completely dry. During the dormant period (when the leaves turn yellow and fall) suspend watering. The best soil is a well-draining and porous one, even better if enriched with 50% of inert materials such as pumice, lapilli or clay. They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
