The name of the genus Aloe is derived from the Greek word "àls-alòs" - "salt", referring to the bitter juice of its leaves. A. capitata is a generally solitary plant and in nature it grows on rocky walls at altitudes ranging from about 500 to 2,000 meters, in Madagascar. Its bluish-green leaves are flattened and have characteristic red-brown teeth along the margins. With the prolonged exposure to the direct sun, the plant takes on a reddish-brown color. Its orange-red flowers bloom from a long stalk.
