A caudiciform plant which is generally hairless. In its caudex, which can reach a diameter of 30 cm, it stores water to survive during drought periods. The greyish colored branches resemble the vine, are creeping and climbing. The green leaves of the digitate form are annuals; they fall off during the vegetative rest and are reborn in the vegetative period.
