Description:
A monoecious plant (it has both sexes on the same individual, but in distinct apparatuses, male - stamens and female - pistil) that can reach up to 1.5 m in height. Its caudex can reach up to 25 cm in diameter, in which the plant stores water to survive during drought periods. The leaves that grow from the base, have palmate sections, with 3-4 veins, are of a light green color. The flowers can be of a light yellow or creamy color. A curios fact: in the past, African peoples used to mix the juice of the fruit of A. Ellenbeckii with meat to poison hyenas.

Plant care:
It requires a lot of light during all seasons, however avoid direct sunlight especially during the hottest hours of the day.
Its natural habitat is in tropical climates, thus it does not withstand temperatures below 10 °C and it does not like too dry heat. It is therefore advisable to keep it away from cold and intense sun.
Water moderately but only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water the plant once every two weeks in spring and summer, and reduce the frequancy to once every two months in autumn and suspend it completely in winter.
The best option is a well-draining soil, even better if further enriched with inert materials such as pumice, sand or lapilli.
They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
