A monoecious plant (presents the two sexes on the same plant, but in distinct male and female apparatuses). In its caudex it stores water to survive during drought periods. From the stem, slightly enlarged and hardly branched, green and oval leaves with lighter veins arise. During the vegetative rest it loses its leaves and then grows them back in the vegetative period. It blooms in spring.
