This cactus exemplar has yellowish spots/streaks due to the lack of chlorophyll in different areas of the epidermis. The name Acanthocalycium comes from the Greek ácantha, spina, and cályx, calice, which means "barbed calyx". The genus Acanthocalycium was first described by Curt Backeberg in the 1930s. These cactaceae grow from the Argentine Andes to the Pampa, due to their climatic diversity (humid due to the proximity of the Paranà river and the sea, dry for the interior), have the characteristic of having a strong adaptability to the most varied temperatures. Its stem, which can be spherical or cylindrical depending on the age of the specimen, is light green or green-coloredblue. It has woolly areoles on the ribs of the plant from which radiate and central spines flow, of a color ranging from white to black. In Greek, thionanthum means "yellow sulphurous flowers", in reference to its splendid bell-shaped flowers of sulphurous yellow or lemon yellow (but also pink, red, or orange).
