P. chichipe f. variegata is a cactacea with a unique and unmistakable appearance, due to its variegation. Its green ramified columnar stem is covered by pale-greyish brown thorns, which, with time, become darker. The green shade alternates with the yellowish of the variegation, creating in this way, a pleasant visual impact and making the plant very sought after by collectors all over the world. This cactus can also have a nocturnal flowering beyond the diurnal one, during the spring/summer period with white-cream or yellow-green flowers, from which come spherical red berries.
