Opuntia acanthocarpa is a shrubby cactus, that can reach up to 2 meters in height. Its green-brown stems are covered with downy white areoles, on which thin yellow spines sprout. During spring and summer, it blooms with flowers, ranging in color from magenta to yellow. It produces red-brown cylindrical fruits at the end of the stem, that ripen about two months after flowering.
