Maihueniopsis

Its name derives from the Greek and indicates that this plant is “similar to Maihuenia”, another genus of cacti with which it shares various aspects. Often considered part of the genera Tephrocactus or Puna, its few species actually have clearly distinguishable characteristics: it has round or globular stems that deviate from the ground by only a few centimeters and white thorns that create a strong chromatic contrast with the stem, but the characteristic that the large and very large flowers, which give a truly showy and ornamental overall appearance, are undoubtedly more appreciated. Here are some simple tips for its proper care and cultivation: It likes full sun and rather airy situations. It prefers fairly mild temperatures, although it can survive well even at temperatures close to freezing, provided the soil is dry. It should be watered in moderation, making sure that the soil is completely dry between one watering and the next. It is sufficient to water your Maihueniopsis once a week in spring and summer, while in winter the water supply must be completely suspended to allow the plant to enter its vegetative rest period. We recommend a well-draining soil as optimal, the ideal would be if it were further enriched with inert materials such as pumice, sand or lapillus. These are plants that do not need frequent fertilization, for this reason it will be more than enough to dilute the specific fertilizer with watering once a year, if deemed necessary.
