The monstrous shape of this cactus presents anomalies such as reliefs or asymmetries that make each exemplar unique because these characteristics will never be identical in two or more plants. In its normal form E. castanea is a cylindrical cactus that branches into a shrub. It has a bright green stem with about 10 rounded ribs where fluffy areolas form from which orange spines emerge with brown tips and that with the growth become grayish. In the flowering period it produces white diurnal inflorescences.
