It is a globular and usually solitary cactus, which can occasionally cluster at the base. Its greyish-green stem, concave at the apex, has multiple well-furrowed ribs equipped with slightly fluffy white areoles. The thorns are robust, curved and they are of a red color that, with age, tends to lighten considerably. The variegated shape of this cactus has the typical yellow areas in the exact points where chlorophyll is absent: these characteristics will never be the same from one plant to another, therefore each specimen will be absolutely unique and, for this reason, highly sought after by collectors. Flowering occurs in spring at the apex of the plant, generating small, funnel-shaped purple flowers with very characteristic and striking white margins.
