This globe-shaped cactaceae grows in coastal areas where there are granitic and poorly draining substrates. Initially it is solitary but with the passage of time it gets excited creating new suckers. Its greyish green stem tends with prolonged exposure to the sun to also take purple shades and is covered by a plum that gives it an almost waxy appearance. It has numerous tubercles above which are found orange fluffy areoles that with time become greyish. The thorns come out from the areoles and are rigid; the shades are initially dark and then turn dark red and then gray. During the flowering period, in summer, this cactus gives deep yellow funnel-shaped flowers.
