This cactus has a columnar body typical of the genres similar to Cereus, consisting of symmetrical longitudinal ribs, which in turn are cut horizontally by poorly pronounced tubercles. At the apex of each tubercle are present white roundish and woolly areoles, so close together to give the impression of creating a continuous vertical line. The central spines are short, thin and of a yellowish-white colour, arranged radially as if wrapping the stem, whilst the central ones are darker and more robust, directed outwards and visibly longer, able therefore to confer to the whole plant that wild aspect that is typical of the dessert’s cactus. In summer, the charm of this cactacea is accentuated by big red flowers, which bloom exclusively at night along the sides of the stem.
