The variegated shape of this cactus presents the typical yellow zones in the exact points where the chlorophyll is absent, therefore each exemplar will never be identical to the others and, for this very reason, is so sought after by collectors. In its normal form, this beloved cactus, commonly known also as the "glory of Texas" to indicate how the populations are proud of the origin of this plant so currently widespread, has a single green-greyish stem with a slightly ovate shape, fitted with wide and tuberculate ribs, sometimes arranged in a slight spiral. The characteristic for which they are so famous, so much to suggest also the name to the species, are without doubt the long coloured spines with bands, from yellow to red. Another very loved peculiarity are the inflorescences that bloom at the apex, rather large, bell-shaped, generally also of a double color, with a throat more lively than the ends, characterized by the extreme silky luster of each single petal.
