Sesamothamnus

Its name literally means "shrub similar to Sesame". It's a herbaceous plant, whose seeds are commonly used in our diet. It is a small tree with soft, sometimes multiple, stems which, as they grow, tend to become woody and thorny or, in some particular species, swollen at the base like baobabs. In its natural habitat it can reach up to several meters in height, while in your house it is able to perfectly decorate any interior, pruning it in the most appreciated forms, such as a graceful bonsai, or often, due to the grotesque shapes that the stem takes, it can decorate your ornamental gardens in an exclusive and unique way. Sesamothamnus is easy to cultivate and very versatile: if you live in warm climate zones you can also plant them outdoors. Here are some easy tips for its proper care and cultivation: It requires a lot of light and likes direct sun rays. It likes intense tropical heat, and doesn’t withstand temperatures close to freezing, so place it in sheltered in dry locations in winter. It requires a lot of water in hot periods, as long as it does not stagnate in the roots. On the other hand, when it loses its leaves during the winter period, it enters vegetative rest and it is advisable to keep it dry. The best option is a substrate suitable for cactaceae, as long as it is well draining. They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
