The name of this genus comes from the Greek and literally means "fire-colored", in reference to the magnificent orange-red flowers blooming at the apex of the cactaceae. It is a genus nowadays often included among the Neoporterie, however it also has unique characteristics that distinguish it from other cacti. From the solitary and spherical stem, what immediately stands out at first sight are its long and robust thorns, which in nature allow the plant to defend itself from animal attacks and to retain as much water as possible avoiding to dissipate it. This fierce cactus will bring in your locations for a combination of wild charm and lively floral elegance that has no comparison! Here are some tips for its cultivation: It likes very bright and ventilated positions, avoiding the direct rays of the sun in the hottest hours of the day. It is preferable to keep it at mild temperatures and especially never less than 5 º C, for this reason it is recommended to place it in sheltered and airy places during the winter. Water with moderation and only when the soil is completely dry. It is sufficient once a week in spring and summer, with reduction every two months in autumn, while it is advisable to suspend completely in winter. It is optimal to use soil for cacti, well draining. Those are plants that do not need frequent fertilization, it will be sufficient to dilute a specific fertilizer with the water of the watering once a year.
