Portulaca

The Portulaca genus includes about 100 species, very similar to each other. The Portulaca is a succulent plant that branches easily, expanding horizontally into beautiful green carpets or shrubs. The plant produces numerous sturdy stems, on which green, cylindrical or rounded succulent leaves grow. When Portulaca blooms it produces inflorescences of various colors: from white to yellow, from fuchsia to bright red; sometimes there are even wonderful two-colored flowers. A curious fact: some varieties of this genus are edible and have been used for the preparation of traditional dishes for 3000 years now! It was considered as "food for poor people" and as feed for pigs, hence the name of the genus (from the Latin word "porcus" - "pig", and literally means "pig grass"). The Portulaca is a plant that does not require any special care, so it is ideal for adorning your gardens or balconies. Here are some easy tips for its proper care and cultivation: Likes spaces in the full sun. It prefers mild or high temperatures, when the temperature drops below 10 °C, it is advisable to shelter it. Water moderately, only when the soil is completely dry. It is sufficient to water it once a week in spring and summer; suspend watering completely in autumn and winter. It does not need a particular substrate, however it prefers sandy and draining soils. They do not need frequent fertilizations, it is enough to dilute fertilizer with watering once a year.
