It produces a stem, covered with large leaves, positioned very close to each other, hence its name 'compactum'. The plant is distinguished by the particular shape of its leaves: they are fleshy, cylindrical, slightly angular and pointed (for which the plant is often called "Little Jewel"), they are of a light green color, with purple hues towards the apex and a very evident white tip.
