This exemplar of cactus with a globose stem tends to become cylindrical over time. It has numerous ribs with pronounced tubercles, above which we find the fluffy white areoles. From the latter come out its radial and central spines: the first are radially arranged, yellowish-white and slightly curved towards the stem; the central spines are more robust, longer and brown or brownish in color. N. elegans gives beautiful funnel-shaped flowers that bloom at the apex of the stem and are yellow or light yellow and in the lower part of its petals it has slight reddish shades with a median line of the same color.
