The variegated shape of this cactus has yellowish spots or shades in the exact points of the epidermis where there is a lack of chlorophyll; such stains will never be identical in plants making each of them unique and for this reason much sought after by collectors around the world. In its normal form N. buiningii, also known as Parodia buiningii, it has a slightly flattened globose shape and is generally solitary. Its ribs are well defined with white and fluffy areoles from which emerge the long and rigid spines from the pale greenish color with brown shades at the base. During the flowering period, in summer, this wonderful cactus gives beautiful yellow flowers that open during the day and close at night.
