Globose cactus with the typical violet-coloured stem, which accentuates with the exposure to the sun. It has ribs with white and woolly areoles, and black and long thorns. The f. crested makes N. intermedia unique in its kind because of the original and unmistakable forms it takes. In late Spring the funnel-shaped flowers, typical of this family, are born, with shades varying from pink to fuchsia. This variety takes the name of 'pulchella', "pretty" because it is smaller than others similar to her; this characteristic makes it almost a miniature, for this reason it is much appreciated by collectors.
