The crested shape of M. schiedeana is very appreciated by collectors as it presents the very particular fan crest, a characteristic that will never be identical in plants making each of them unique in its kind. In its normal form it is a small, slow-growing globe-shaped cactus. The peculiarity of this plant are its beautiful short spines arranged in a corolla, more golden towards the center and shaded white on the tips. The areoles between them form a thick white fluff that, together with the thorns, completely covers the cactus. Usually growing tends to tuft, forming a thick glossy pillow. During the winter, from the thick feathery mantle emerge small flowers that vary from white to cream.
