In nature it grows among the rocks in dry tropical deciduous forests at an altitude between 1,000 and 2,600 meters above sea level. The M. mystax in nature has hard, very long and intertwined spines, similar to a weapon. It is a solitary cactus of a globular to cylindrical shape. The gray-green stem is covered with tubercles, between which you can see a kind of white down, similar to wool. The spines in young specimens are straight and short, ranging in color from white, yellow to brown. It blooms from February to April, creating a beautiful wreath of magenta flowers with shades of purple. It is an easy to grow plant, also suitable for beginners.
