M. montensis in its variegated shape is a unique and distinctive cactaceae exemplar, thanks to its variegation. Its globose stem has an opaque green hue which alternates with the yellowish variegation, creating a strong contrast. It has very deep rhomboidal tubercles among which grows a white down. On the tip of every tubercle is present a white and woolly areola from which the spines come out: the radials are thin, of white or yellowish colour whilst the central ones have a dark tonality, are much more robust than the radial ones and longer.
