The crested shape of this cactus has a very particular fan crest, which will always present different plants, making each of them unique in its kind. In the normal form M. microhelia is a normally solitary columnar cactus that with growth can tuft. Its green stem is covered by conical and bare tubercles from which grow numerous spines; the radial ones are white and arranged like a corolla and resemble the rays of the sun, while the central spines are needle-like and straight brown in color. Blooming gives us a show of many flowers arranged in a crown around the apex. The color of the flower varies from green-yellow to pink-magenta, they are bell-shaped with pointed petals.
