The crested shape of this plant looks like a spiny light green fan, more massive and less "open", than the crests of the other species. In its classic form, it is a cactus with a solitary habit, which, as it grows, often assumes a dichotomous form, for this reason it is called "Owl's eye cactus". On its dark green stem, there are numerous pyramidal-shaped tubercles, between which a thick white down develops. The brown spines are straight, stiff and robust, which take on a gray color over time.
