In nature it grows in a tropical forest at an altitude between 150 and 2,100 m asl. It is a cactus with a solitary habit, that takes on a dichotomous form with growing, for this reason it is called "Owl's Eye Cactus". On its dark green stem there are numerous pyramidal tubercles, among which a thick white down develops. The brown spines are straight, stiff and robust, taking on a gray color over time. The flowers are born at the apex, where the plant developed the previous year. Flowering occurs in spring, blooming with funnel-shaped flowers of a yellow color, mottled with brown inside the petals.
