The variegated shape of this cactus has spots or streaks due to the lack of chlorophyll in the epidermis. This particularity makes the specimen unique and highly sought after. In its normal form, L. amblayensis is a small compact cluster cactus. Its stem, of a black-green color, has numerous woolly areoles from which short spines emerge, ranging from a cream white to black color. In spring it generates flowers of the characteristic bright orange color, which remain open 3-4 days.
