H. lachayensis is a columnar cacti plant native to the extremely dry deserts found along the coasts of Peru and northern Chile. It has a ramified stem covered by yellow or green thorns. From the areoles of colour varying from yellow to dark brown, woolly, radial and central thorns come out. The radials are yellow, thick and with time they become darker. The central ones, otherwise, are very robust and less numerous than the radial ones, usually one or two. During the flowering period, early summer, gives us beautiful white flowers for a pleasant visual effect.
