A globose cactus, generally solitary, of an iridescent color, that varies from reddish to green-bluish. G. quehlianum has the particular characteristic of having the flattest stem among all the Gymnocalyciums. It has numerous tubercles and numerous areoles, that are located very close to each other, from which small yellowish spines emerge. This plant demonstrates all its beauty during the flowering season: large white-pink flowers last up to a week.
