It is a globular-shaped cactus, flattened at the apex, with an initially solitary habit that over time can cluster at the base. It has flat ribs with little pronounced tubercles, on which very downy areoles are formed. The spines of this species are extremely particular: usually they are 3 in number, needle-like, rigid and thick, straight or slightly curved, which grow downwards; the spines are of a brownish-yellow color with a darker tip, but with the maturity of the plant they become gray. The color of the epidermis can vary from olive green to brownish-green. It produces funnel-shaped inflorescences of white color with a pink throat.
