G. intermedium is a beautiful small, globular cactus. Its dark green/bluish stem has marked ribs at the apex but that, going down downwards, tend to flatten and to be less protruding. We can notice the white and woolly areoles, which are not very numerous, but arranged symmetrically between them. The robust thorns come out from the areoles of G. intermedium and are whitish with dark tips, with the passage of time they get yellowish or brown hues. Normally there are 3-4 spines per areola. Its magnificent funnel-shaped white flowers bloom, at the apex of the plant. The white petals are very delicate and at the base have reddish shades, while the pistils at the center of the flower are of intense yellow color.
