Ferocactus horridus f. monster is a very particular plant, which is highly sought after by cactus collectors for its strange shapes (for this reason the name of 'monster'), atypical for the normal form. It is a slow growing cactus with a solitary habit. Its green stem, initially globular, can become columnar up to over two meters in height. With age it develops over forty well-marked and slightly wavy ribs along the ridge, arranged in such a way as to give the plant a sort of spiral shape. From the areoles that frame the ribs hooked and robust spines grow, that are of a brownish-gray color. It blooms with funnel-shaped flowers of a bright yellow color that form a ring at the apex of the stem.
