Ferocactus acanthodes

It is a showy globular cactus, which with growth tends to become columnar, up to two meters in height. It has tuberculous ribs, with prominent very long, flattened and often hooked spines, which create a yellow to red colored vortex, tending to become black with age: a truly extraordinary and unique whirlwind of quills! Between May and July the wild aspect of this plant is "softened" by large yellow flowers of reddish shades, which bloom abundantly at the apex of the cactus.
