Euphorbia cv. Cocklebur

Also known as Euphorbia japonica, it is a hybrid of 2 species: Euphorbia susannae and Euphorbia bupleurifolia. Its small caudiciform stem (caudex) in the shape of a pine cone, partially hidden underground, reaches a maximum of 4 cm in diameter, covered by olive green or dark brown tubercles. Its thin light green leaves protrude from the apex of the stems, forming 3-5 cm long tufts. In the dormant period, this plant drops its leaves to reduce water loss, and then grows them back in the awakening period. It is a very rare plant, which is highly appreciated by green collectors all over the world for its particular pineapple shape.
